The majority of potential college student-athletes have to do a lot of leg work to gain exposure to college coaches.
WAYS FOR PLAYERS TO GAIN EXPOSURE:
- College Showcases (remember to first contact schools you are interested in and let them know you are interested in their program and send them the schedule)
- College Combines or Player ID Camps with many college coaches attending
- Player ID Camps held by the colleges you are interested in
- Summer Camps of the college and staff you are interested in
- Highllght Videos and player profile brochures
THINGS TO CONSIDER AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE
- Does the soccer team/coach fit your needs as a player? Be mindful it can change at any time based on coach employment.
- You can reach out to coaches from as early as your freshman year, but coaches cannot communicate with you until the older ages. Use this time to introduce yourself, provide a resume, and show an interest in the program.
- Avoid generic or bcc emails! Show the coaches your maturity and independence in your communication.
- Create video clips from games. Find clips that also highlight your use of space and time, and moments of decision making which anticipated an action on the field. Your coach will be happy to help you with areas to identify within a video.
While the soccer program is a major focus, student-athletes must consider the bigger picture:
- Location – you will be there for 4 years if not more. That’s a long time if it’s not the environment you thrive in.
- Cost – consider the large financial commitment you are making--don’t rely on scholarships.
- Education – Ultimately college is where you focus on your chosen profession and start to gain needed knowledge and education to be successful in the work place. Does the college match your academic or career ambitions? Does the college have other potential options you may be interested in if you change your mind?
